We are flooded with information about pollution and degradation of environment. Costly projects have been worked out by individual nations and international organisations to protect the atmosphere, water, vegetation, wildlife. But these measures haven’t produced the desired effect because we are battling the effects, not the causes of the problem. And there are lots of problems now.
The rainforests are the heart of the world, circulating warm, moisture laden air around the globe. They have to be protected and restored so that they can fulfill their ecological task of helping to the natural evolution of life to continue.
Human activity is increasingly destroying nature’s biodiversity. Modern agriculture techniques are removing natural habitats and replacing the natural abundance of species with vast tracts of monocultured land, which currently survives courtesy of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Now by genetic manipulation, totally contrived species of plants and animals can be created and sustained in what may become very productive but largely artificial and highly simplified environment.
The state of the environment across Europe has improved in several respects over the past decade, but much of the progress is likely to be wiped out by economic growth because governments have yet to make significant strides towards decoupling environment pressures from economic activity.
We all know about such worldwide organisations as Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth, but there are others, too. For example, the EEA. The European Environment Agency is the main source of information used by the European Union and its Member States in developing environment policies. The Agency aims to support sustainable development and to help achieve significant and measurable improvement in Europe’s environment.
