Letters in English are arranged (or laid out) on paper according to a certain plan. The word 'layout' is used to refer to this general arrangement. However, 'layout' doesn't mean the format (see pages 17 and 24) only. It also means a well-organized body of the letter.
The Heading
This term refers to the address that appears at the top (or head) of the letter. The address is written in the top right-hand corner of the page (the only exception is the full-block format) and is followed by the date. The order of the Lithuanian address is as follows: name of street. numbers of house and flat, town or city, area, country. Never write your name at the top of the letter. It is common in England to put a comma after each line and a full-stop after the last one. It is common in the USA not to put any commas or full-stops after lines in the address. The date is written in full, ie March 4th 1998. The abbreviations used for days are: lst, 2nd, 3rd, 4*. These numbers may be placed either before or after the name of the month, e. g. June 8th and 8th June are equally correct. US doesn’t use 'th' after numbers. In fact, there are many ways to write the date in English:
8* September, 1999 8 September, 1999 September 8, 1999
8* Sept, 1999 September 8th, 1999 Sept. 8, 1999
When in figures, British and American dates are written differently; the month and the day are reversed:
8 September 1999 GB: 8/9/99 USA:9/8/99
The name of the country may be left out of your address only when you are writing to come one who lives in your country.
