Stereotyping of male and female identities in magazines

Stereotypes are inevitable in tabloids which are part of media, because they act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or a group of people. These codes are related with classes, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation. So, the subject of this term paper is stereotypes of gender identities and the purpose is to find out what traditional stereotypes of femininity and masculinity are presented by tabloids, where are the root causes of stereotyping men and women and what is the impact of stereotypes on individuals.
The femme fatale, the super mummy, the sexy kitten and nasty corporate climber are different portrayals of women. Images of young and thin female bodies on magazines covers entice women to buy them. Articles of tabloids are also full of fashion and beauty materials and of a lot of advice how to have all – the perfect marriage, loving children, great sex, and a rewarding career. Magazines cover stories of ideal women, who are young, have children, loving husbands. These stereotypes are perpetuated during the last century. Even the oldest British magazines for women are full of images of thin and beautiful women bodies.
Moreover, the main suggestion of girls’ magazines is: “Be The Girl Everyone Loves!” According to this, girl must be glamorous young woman, who knows all hair, skin and make up tricks. Bakari Chavanu revealed that girls (women too) can hardly find articles in their magazines, because there is an advertisement on almost every page of them.
