Wales and climate change

The Welsh landscape can change by the mile - and, thanks to the weather, by the minute. The rain can end as suddenly as it started, giving way to those clear blue skies and a pin-sharp clarity that brings out the photographer in all of us. It's a surprising place. Dale, in the far west, is one of the sunniest places in Britain with over 1,800 hours of sunshine a year.
In the Ogwen Valley near Capel Curig, is Wales's first National Nature Reserve. A bowl in the mountains scooped by the glaciers of the last Ice Age is now filled with the inky black waters of Llyn Idwal. Above the lake, steep, craggy slopes lead into the heart of Snowdonia, the preserve of experienced walkers.
The Great Bog of Tregaron is a huge, reedy expanse. A former lake near the headwaters of the River Teifi, this structure is a rare example of a raised peat bog. It's rich in wildlife. The plants that grow here are now very rare in Britain. Many birds can also be seen, including the rare red kite.
To the south are the old valleys; to the north are the open, bare mountainsides of the Brecon Beacons. Landscape is full of waterfalls, caves, potholes and deep, wooded gorges. Just south of village Ystradfellte there is Porth yr Ogof, a giant cave entrance that swallows up the River Mellte. Further downstream, the river tumbles down a staircase of magnificent waterfalls.
The sea surrounds Wales on three of its sides. Its 750-mile (1,200-km) coastline has variety of beaches bays and harbours. Much of the coastline is rich in natural beauty - Pembrokeshire, for example, is home to Britain's only coastal-based National Park, and there are hundreds of miles of seashore which have been declared 'Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty'.
