Computer - the incredible machine

Since the earliest times, people have tried to find a way to do their work easier. One of the most difficult and the most tedious work was computing and calculating. Of course, in the Middle Ages calculating wasn’t as difficult as it is now, but everything changed when the XIX century came. It brought many changes in mathematics and calculation and people found it difficult to calculate big numbers with long formulas. They needed a machine which could help them.
The history of the computer began in the 1623 when a German mathematician and engineer Wilhem Schickard constructed the first mechanical calculator which could perform simple operations with numbers. However, this device didn’t fit the modern definition of a computer because it could not be programmed. In 1837 Charles Babbage was the first to design a fully programmable mechanical computer that he called "The Analytical Engine". Due to limited finance, and an inability to resist tinkering with the design, Babbage never actually built his Analytical Engine. Suchlike computers which we are using now began to appear after invention of the transistor in the late 40’s. But then computers were being used only for military affairs and scientific researches, because they were quite huge in size - early electronic computers were the size of a large room and they were outrageously expensive.
