A matter of considerable controversy at present is the issue of democracy in the classroom. There are two fronts sharing absolutely opposite opinions.
The first front is for democracy in the classroom. Into this group fall all the pupils, a bigger part of parents, Board of Education, and people in politics responsible for education. They believe and do all the possible to “protect” and strengthen pupils’ rights and conditions at school. It seems to them, that nowadays pupils are too much controlled and pressed by a teacher, that’s why there appear more and more laws protecting (stating) pupils’ rights. The latest proposal is to fire the pedagogue at once if he is accused of using physical or psychological force against the learner without a right to continue pedagogical work. It seems absolutely absurd to me and all pedagogues as well. First of all, because these proposals are made by people who have no idea what is it to be a teacher. It is obvious, that this job becomes tougher due to pupils’ irresponsibility, disrespect and lost interest in studies. Today a scholar seeks for money, not for knowledge. He goes to school only because it is compulsory and because parents insist on doing it, or simply goes to meet friends. The biggest pars of information, the teacher presents seems simply nonsense to him. I think this lack of interest in studies is the effect of the democracy at school. Pupils feel too much freedom that’s why it becomes difficult to control them. They feel superior as any time they can report about teacher’s inadequate behavior, even if it is motiveless.
