E. Gaskell "North and South"

Images of the Industrial Revolution created by Gaskell reflect the realities of it in a number of ways including the people, their surroundings, social and economical status. All the time Gaskell points out how the North and South were different through the eyes of different characters. However, the similarities between the two regions are not described, which makes them look like two different worlds. It is interesting to realize how the characters try to adapt to the new environment they have moved to.
One way that the author uses to reflect the realities of the Industrial Revolution is through the thoughts, words and actions of the people living during that period. Gaskell also often emphasizes the differences in the people of the North and of the South. In reality it is known that the life during the revolution was hard, even if the economy was progressing. The people of the North suffered the most, where majority of the manufacturing work took place. Gaskell describes the people there as “worn out”, “with a busy mind”. Nearly all of them worked long hours, in the local factories, because the wages there were better than of any other job’s. Gaskell demonstrates this by introducing the Hale family-trouble of not being able to find another servant to help Dixon. Another difference seen through Margaret’s eyes was the fact that “there were no smock- frocks, even among the country folk”. They had become unpractical because of the danger of getting caught in the machines and also of being very uncomfortable to wear while working. The richer class, which could be determined by the material of their clothes, was different from the same class that could be found in London; walking with a “slovenly looseness” rather than the Londoners’ “shabby thread- bear smartness”.
