Ofall the buildings in this volume, few have greater power to uplift and inspire then those created for that very purpose. The motives behind building such monuments of faith or remembrance can certainly be mixed. Viewed strictly as functional structures, great churches share the same brief – that of spanning over a single large space for worship. Much ingenuity and considerable effort have been expended in creating larger and higher spaces with the minimum of obstructive supports. Many of the most memorable and inspiring places of worship have been created by architects with no declared faith or belief beyond that in their own ability to achieve spaces, which could lift the hearts of others. The power of these buildings derives from their quality as architecture and their ability to embody effortlessly, through the ages, the image of the infinite.
Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia is one of the great domed buildings of the world. Its exterior silhouette hints at the shock of the interior space, but the visual power and success of this dome, 31 m in diameter, can only be appreciated from inside. The church of Hagia Sophia – “Holy Wisdom” – was built and decorated in just six years between 532 and 537. Hagia Sophia was in fact the third church on this site. The first Great Church of Constantinople preceded it.By the early 5th century the first church of Hagia Sophia was a target in times of civil and ecclesiastic unrest. Its status as the public symbol of imperial power led to more trouble in the 6th century and the church was again burnt down in major riots in January 532.
