During the time I’ve got, I am going to give you as much information about the immigration to the USA as I can. I’ll present some historical facts about it. Secondly, I’ll analyze in more detail the Americans’ reaction towards immigration during all the period of immigration. Thirdly, I’ll try to comment on the nowadays emigration situation from Lithuania, and I’ll point out the advantages and disadvantages of living and working abroad. Finally, I’ll conclude my ideas.
As a starting point it must be mentioned, that the story of the American people is the story of immigrants. In fact, the United States has welcomed more immigrants than any other country in the world. It is interesting that more than 75 percent of all people, who ever moved from their homeland, settled in the United States. Since its early days, the United States has accepted more than 50 million newcomers.
Let me give you a brief description of a very interesting and complicated American history. Evidently, Christopher Columbus discovered the American continents in 1492. Since that time the immigration process had begun. Many colonists came to start a new life or to escape oppressive conditions in their native lands. What is more, these World War II refugees from Europe observe the Statue of Liberty as their ship approaches the United States. The Statue of liberty is a symbol of the hope and freedom that the country offers. After America had been found, colonists from Spain, Great Britain, Holland, Sweden, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Ireland and other countries started moving to the “New World”. Why did these early European colonists risk a dangerous ocean journey to settle in an unknown land? The truth is that they were brought by the same desires that still bring immigrants today.
