The Town Hall was constructed between 1561 and 1564 for famous architect Cornelis de Vriendt. It is in the Flemish-Italian Renaissance style, also known as the Floris style.
Antwerp had made plans at the beginning of the 16th century to build a new town hall in Gothic style. But only twenty years later fashion had changed. The Gothic style was out and Renaissance style had become the new fashion.
F.Braudel states that Antwerp became "the center of the entire international economy—something Bruges had never been even at its height." (Braudel 1985 p. 143.) Antwerp's "Golden Age" is tightly linked to the "Age of Exploration". Over the first half of the 16th century Antwerp grew to become the second largest European city north of the Alps by 1560.
In 1560, the magistrate decided to build a city hall on the wide western side of the Grote Markt Square. Moreover, there had to be shops on the ground floor. The rent money was expected to help the city recover from building costs.
The decoration was supposed to show people of Antwerp and the higher authorities as well.
The City Hall has three floors. The middle riselite has five and splits up the facade into two equal parts. It has a small bell tower at the top.
The interior of this city hall can take you to tree centuries in time: it is 16 century, 19 century and academic art.
The Leys Hall is a very impressive room. Because the main complements used for the creation this room are marble, wood and big imagination for the famous painter.
The wedding hall is the largest room in the city hall. This is not a coincidence, because it was designed to be used for the reception of kings and governors. In 1880-1884 the Wedding room was used for weddings. The City commissioned V....
