T. Adorno and M. Horkheimer. Culture industry

According to Adorno and Horkheimer we become inherent in the technical and personnel apparatus which down to the last cog forms part of the economical mechanism of selection. However the concept of selection is imaginary and consumers can only choose products which been chosen and offered for them by the others. (Adorno 1993: 32).
“The stronger the position of the cultural industry becomes, the more summarily it can deal with consumers” needs, producing them, controlling them, disciplining them and even withdrawing amusement” (Adorno 1997: 144) However, they say that that the pleasure principle and amusement are imaginary and promises you a fulfilment that you can’t get from standardized products and that it is a false satisfaction of false needs. In Adorno and Horkheimer’s book “Dialectic of Enlightenment” they argue that the culture industry does not bear any relations to the factual values and that products themselves have no real meaning. Also there is no antithesis or connection between commodities and “the whole world is made to pass through the filter of the culture industry” (Adorno 1997: 126) They said that by putting the same stamp on everything: films, radio, magazines, and TV caused cultural chaos and confusion and that this system became uniform as a whole and in every part and that everything is shaped to the last detail by those who have greatest economic power (Adorno and Horkheimer 1993: 30). Adorno and Horkheimer also states that the culture industry is corrupt and that by using formulae and propaganda the public does as they have been programmed to do. They say that production for consumer needs just simply doesn’t exist but has been created as such and “unmistakably demonstrated and inflicted on its victims” (Adorno at al. 1993: 39).
