Th. Dreiser "Sister Carrie"

Teodore Dreiser was born in 1871 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Part of a large German-American family, and the ninth of ten children, his childhood was marked by poverty. He left home when he was 16 and worked at whatever jobs he could find. With the help of his former teacher, he was able to spend the year at Indiana University. When Dreiser was twenty-year-old he started to write for the Chicago Globe. As a novelist Dreiser made his debut with Sister Carrie, a powerful account of a young working girl's rise to success and her slow decline. In his fiction, Dreiser deals with social problems and with characters who struggle to survive. In his later writing he considered the impact of economic society on the lives of people in the remarkable trilogy - The Financier, The Titan, and The Stoic. His best known work is An American Tragedy. Unable to write well towards the end of his life, he moved to Hollywood and supported himself by the sale of film rights of his earlier works. He died there in 1945 at the age of seventy-four.
The novel Sister Carrie begins with Carrie (the main character) boarding a train for Chicago. She is going to live with her sister in the city and find a job there. Things do not work out for her though, so when Drouet, a man she has recently met, offers to take care of her, she accepts his offer. Carrie finds her life with Drouet quite pleasant, he buys her new clothes and takes her to the theatre. But when Carrie meets Drouet's friend, Mr. Hurstwood, she finds him much more elegant than Drouet and becomes engaged to Hurstwood too. Hurstwood is a wealthy man with a good reputation who makes a bad decision that forces him...
