According to historians, Vilnius is connected with the earliest period of the existence of the
Lithuania’s state. It is thought that the first Lithuania’s ruler to be baptized, Mindaugas, built
the first cathedral here approximately in the middle of the 13 th century, and it does not seem
accidental that at the end of the 14 th century the location for the first catholic cathedral of the
Grand Duchy of Lithuania was chosen in Vilnius.
There are two oldest and main churches in Vilnius: the Cathedral and the Church of St.John,
the first parish church of Vilnius. In 1272 an altar for the pagan god Perkūnas was built by the
Lithuanian prince Šventaragis near the place where the present Cathedral is. Since then this place
has been called the Valley of Šventaragis. Here, in 1314 the Grand Prince Gediminas built a
sanctuary in honor of Perkūnas. The sanctuary was without a roof. The oaks growing around it
