If you receive a compliment, you may smile. You may be pleased and feel happy. If you are criticized, you may look downward and you may feel depressed. Stress is the cause of many health problems. Some stress can be prevented. Fortunately, there are many ways to cope successfully with stress.
Uptight, keyed up, tense are terms that are often used to describe the feelings and actions of a person under stress. Stress is the psychophysiological response of the body to something that is thought of as pleasant or as unpleasent by the person experiencing it.
Things that cause stress are called stressors. Stressors can be either physical or mental – emotional. Mental – emotional stressors will often be those things or events that bring about a strong emotion such as love, anger, joy. Physical stressors can include such things as illness, injury, and strenuous physical activity. Physical stressors can also include changes in the environment that make demands on the body. Examples of the mental – emotional and physical stressors: events of personal success, joyful events, family problems, meeting new people, personal illness, death of a family member or a friend, moving to a new location.
