A) Plan of investigation
The aim of this investigation is to find out if the growth of support for the Nazi Party was the main cause for Hitler’s rise to power. In order to do this, the investigation will evaluate and compare other causes, such us: the vulnerability of democracy in Weimar Germany under President Hindenburg and the collapse of the German economic system from 1929. The method of investigation consists of comparing different historians’ opinions, as to which was the most important cause for Hitler’s rise to power. Written sources, like books and journals, are mostly used to evaluate opinions. The main sources will be evaluated for their origins, purpose, values and limitations.
B) Summary of evidence
With deep discontent for Versailles treatments and extreme nationalistic feelings, Hitler started his political career after the First World War. Hitler’s first attempt to seize power was in 1923 and it was known as The Munich Beer Hall Putsch. It failed, because it was poorly organized. Hitler was arrested, but it wasn’t the end of his politics. In prison, he decided to make the Nazi Party the most popular and legally destroy democracy. In order to get support he wrote the book Mein Kampf (my struggle).1 To spread his ideas he used propaganda. Not only were radio and art important tools, but also Hitler’s SA organization of 500,000 members. The SA was mostly made up of unemployed ex-soldiers or just ruffians and bullies. Their job was to help in the streets and create a sense of comradeship. Also they distributed propaganda leaflets, protected Nazi meetings and fought with the communists.2 Every year the SA grew and behaved more and more aggressively.
