INTRODUCTION
One of the most complicated tasks is to enumerate all languages which are in use nowadays. Some linguists state that it is possible to count out around forty different subfamilies and some separate languages as well, however only the further studies will reveal the truth.
Indo-European languages are undoubtedly one of the greatest in the world. Some years ago indo-European languages were spoken just in Europe and South Asia, however during the wars and colonization it was spread all over the globe. Today it is widely used by almost two billion people.
The development of indo-European languages is rather complicated. It underwent a variety of changes and took a long period to form it the way we have it now. However, nowadays all those changes are considered to be a rich linguistic heritage.
The aim of this work is to reveal the basic characteristics of Germanic languages which are a subfamily of the Indo-European languages.
This work consists of an introduction, two parts, conclusions, summary and at the end a list of references is given.
In introduction the method and the main aims of the work are discussed.
The body consists of two main parts – the theoretical and the practical. The first theoretical part of the work deals with the Germanic languages in general and the history of West Germanic languages. In the second part the differences between three developments of English language are introduced and analyzed.
Finally, in conclusions the achieved aims are viewed and a brief summary of the work is given.
1. The Germanic languages
Germanic Languages is a subfamily of the Indo-European languages. Germanic languages are spoken by more than 480 million people in northern and Western Europe, North America, South Africa, and Australia. In their structure and evolution languages are classified into three branches:
