NATO. European Union (EU)

The north Atlantic Treaty Organization was established to bind Western Europe and the United States in a common defence against the Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies. On April 4, 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington. The original 12 signatories were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal The United Kingdom, and the United States. Greece and Turkey joined in 1952, West Germany in 1955, and Spain in 1982. The newly unified Germany became a NATO member in 1990. Nato`s purpose is to maintain the international stability, well-being and freedom of its members by means of a system of collective security.
The highest authority within NATO is the North Atlantic Council, composed of Permanent delegates from all members and headed by a secretary general. The committee meets at least twice a year. The highest military authority is the Military Committee which is composed of representatives of the armed forces of member nations. The committee`s headquarters are in Brussels. The treaty consists of a preamble and 14 articles. For example, article 1 calls for peaceful resolution of disputes. Article 4 provides for joint consultations when a member is threatened. Article 10 describes admission procedures for other nations.
Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States fought as allies during World War 2. But as soon as the war ended, the alliance disintegrated . The Soviet Union had emerged as the single greatest power in Europe. Communists parties tried to make inroads everywhere. After the war the United States provided massive economic and military aid in Europe. Military strength was reorganized on the basis of having nuclear weapons as a defence system against the Soviet Union expansiomism.
