Basic terminology
The study of sound in general is the science of acoustics. Phonetics is the term used for the study of sound in human language. It is concerned with the actual properties of speech sounds as well as their production, audition and perception, as opposed to phonology, which operates at the level of sound systems and abstract sound units. Phonetics deals with the sounds themselves rather than the contexts in which they are used in languages. Phonology is the study of the selection and patterns of sounds in a particular language. Phonetics and phonology are important components of linguistics, which is the science that deals with the general study of language. The movements of the tongue, lips and other speech organs are called articulations.
Phonetics has three main branches:
• articulatory phonetics, concerned with the positions and movements of the articulators (lips, tongue, vocal tract and folds and other speech organs) in producing speech;
• acoustic phonetics, concerned with the properties of the sound waves and how they are received by the inner ear;
• auditory phonetics, concerned with speech perception and how the brain forms representations of the sounds it receives.
The formulation of the speech message in the brain of the speaker and the interpretation of it in the brain of the listener are branches of psycholinguistics.
Accents and Dialects
There may be several ways in which the language can be pronounced. The term accent refers to differences of pronunciation from the standard pronunciation of the language, by which the speaker might be socially or culturally categorised. To cover variation in grammar and vocabulary, we use the term dialect.
